Bathroom Vanity Buying Guide: Sizes, Styles, Materials & Installation Tips

The bathroom vanity is the anchor of your bathroom design — it sets the style, provides storage, and determines the countertop and sink configuration. Getting the right size, style, and material matters. Here's your complete guide.

Vanity Sizes

Standard Widths

24" — Small bathrooms, powder rooms. Single sink only.
30-36" — The most popular range for guest and secondary bathrooms. Single sink, adequate storage.
48" — Generous single sink with lots of counter space, or tight double sink.
60-72" — Master bathroom double vanity. Each person gets their own sink and storage.

Height

Standard (30-32") — Traditional height. Good for households with children.
Comfort height (34-36") — Same as kitchen counter height. Easier on the back for adults. Increasingly the standard for master bathrooms.

Depth

Standard depth is 21-22". For tight spaces (half baths, narrow hallways), consider 18" deep "petite" vanities. Measure your door clearance — the vanity shouldn't block the bathroom door swing.

Vanity Styles

Freestanding — The most common. Sits on the floor with legs or a plinth. Easy to install, good storage.
Floating/Wall-Mount — Mounted to the wall with no floor contact. Modern, makes the bathroom feel larger, easier to clean the floor underneath. Requires wall blocking for support.
Furniture-style — Looks like a piece of standalone furniture with legs. Open space underneath. Transitional or traditional aesthetic.
Built-in/Custom — Cabinet-style vanities built into the wall. Seamless look, maximum storage, highest cost.

Materials

Solid wood — Premium look and feel. Maple, oak, birch are common. Needs good ventilation — moisture can cause warping over time.
Plywood with veneer — More moisture-resistant than solid wood. The standard for quality vanities.DERA and many KOHLER vanities use this construction.
MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) — Budget-friendly, smooth finish. Less moisture-resistant — avoid in humid bathrooms without ventilation.
Metal/Steel — Industrial or modern aesthetic. Extremely durable, completely moisture-proof. Limited style options.

Countertop Options

Quartz — Engineered stone, non-porous, low maintenance, huge color/pattern selection. The most popular choice for bathroom vanities.
Marble — Natural beauty, unique veining. Requires sealing, can stain. Classic luxury choice.
Granite — Natural stone, very durable. Requires periodic sealing.
Ceramic/vitreous china — Integrated sink and counter in one piece. Easy to clean, very affordable. Common on smaller vanities.
Solid surface (Corian) — Seamless, repairable, non-porous. Good mid-range option.

Sink Configurations

Undermount — Mounted below the counter for a clean edge. Works with stone/quartz tops. Easiest to clean.
Drop-in/Self-rimming — Drops into a cutout, rim sits on the counter. Easy to install, works with any counter material.
Vessel — Sits on top of the counter. Dramatic look, requires a taller or wall-mount faucet.
Integrated — Counter and sink are one piece. Seamless, no joints to leak. Common on ceramic and solid surface vanities.
