Bathroom Lighting Guide: Vanity Lights, Sconces & How to Light Your Bathroom

Good bathroom lighting makes the difference between a functional space and one that feels like a spa. The right lighting plan combines task lighting (for grooming), ambient lighting (for atmosphere), and accent lighting (for design). Here's how to get it right.

Types of Bathroom Lighting

Vanity / Task Lighting

The most important layer. Provides even, shadow-free illumination at the mirror for shaving, makeup, and grooming. Best placement: sconces on both sides of the mirror at eye level (about 65-66" from floor). A single bar light above the mirror works but can create shadows under the chin and eyes.

Ambient / Overhead Lighting

General illumination for the whole room. Typically a flush-mount or semi-flush ceiling fixture. In larger bathrooms, recessed can lights provide clean, even coverage.

Accent Lighting

Decorative lighting that adds atmosphere. LED strip lights under a floating vanity, backlit mirrors, or a small chandelier in a master bath. Not essential but elevates the space.

Fixture Selection

• Sconces (wall-mount) — Best for flanking a mirror. Choose fixtures that direct light outward, not up or down. Frosted or linen shades diffuse light evenly.
• Vanity bar lights — Horizontal fixtures mounted above the mirror. Choose 3-4 light bars for 36"+ vanities. LED versions are energy-efficient and long-lasting.
• Flush-mount ceiling — For general lighting. Choose damp-rated fixtures for bathrooms (not just dry-rated).
• Recessed / Can lights — Clean, minimal look. Use IC-rated (insulation contact) housings. Place one directly above the shower (wet-rated required).

Important Specs

• Color temperature: 2700K-3000K (warm white) is most flattering for skin tones. Avoid 5000K+ (daylight) in bathrooms — it's harsh.
• Lumens: Aim for 40-50 lumens per square foot. A 50 sq ft bathroom needs about 2,000-2,500 lumens total from all sources.
• CRI (Color Rendering Index): 90+ CRI is ideal for bathrooms. It makes colors look accurate — critical for makeup and grooming.
• Damp/Wet rating: All bathroom fixtures should be damp-rated at minimum. Fixtures directly in or above a shower must be wet-rated.
