Building or upgrading a shower involves multiple components that must work together. Unlike a faucet that comes as a complete unit, a shower system is assembled from separate trim pieces, valves, and showerheads. This guide explains how the pieces fit together.
The rough-in valve is installed inside the wall during construction or renovation. It controls water flow and temperature. The two main types are pressure balance (maintains temperature when other fixtures are used) and thermostatic (lets you set a precise temperature and control volume separately). The rough-in valve must be installed before the wall is closed up.
The trim kit is the visible part — the handle, escutcheon plate, and sometimes a showerhead. Trim kits mount onto the rough-in valve. Important: the trim kit must be compatible with the rough-in valve. Most brands have proprietary systems — a KOHLER trim requires a KOHLER valve, a Delta trim requires a Delta valve.
Showerheads thread onto the shower arm that extends from the wall. Options include fixed heads, rain showerheads (large overhead coverage), and multi-function heads with spray patterns. Flow rates range from 1.75 GPM (WaterSense) to 2.5 GPM standard.
A hand shower on a hose provides flexibility for rinsing, cleaning, and bathing children or pets. Hand showers can mount on a slide bar, hook, or be integrated into a diverter system.
Pressure balance valves are the standard choice for most homes. They prevent temperature spikes when someone flushes a toilet or runs the washing machine. They control temperature with a single handle but cannot precisely set a temperature.
Thermostatic valves let you set an exact temperature and maintain it regardless of pressure changes. They typically have separate handles for temperature and volume. Thermostatic systems are preferred for luxury showers and multi-head configurations.
For showers with multiple outlets (rain head + hand shower + body sprays), you need a valve system with enough ports and a diverter to switch between them. A 2-function diverter handles two outlets; a 3-function handles three. Make sure your water heater can supply enough hot water for all active heads simultaneously.
We are authorized dealers for KOHLER, Delta, Moen, hansgrohe, Brizo, and ROHL. Our team can help you match trim kits to valves, plan multi-head configurations, and ensure all components are compatible.
