Bathroom Vanity Buying Guide: Sizes, Styles & What to Look For

A bathroom vanity anchors the room design while providing essential storage and countertop space. With sizes ranging from 18 inches to 72 inches and materials from solid wood to engineered composites, choosing the right vanity requires measuring carefully and understanding what works for your space.

Vanity Sizes

  • 18-24 inches: Powder rooms and small half baths. Usually single sink with minimal storage.
  • 30-36 inches: Standard guest bathrooms. Provides a single sink with drawer and cabinet storage.
  • 48-60 inches: Master bathrooms. Available in single or double sink configurations.
  • 60-72 inches: Large master baths. Typically double sink with extensive storage.

Measure your available wall space and leave at least 1-2 inches of clearance on each side for installation and door swing. Check that the vanity depth (typically 18-22 inches) does not block doorways or walkways.

Vanity Types

Freestanding Vanities

The most common type. Freestanding vanities sit on the floor with legs or a base and are available in every size and style. Easy to install — they typically just need to be leveled and secured to the wall.

Wall-Mounted (Floating) Vanities

Mounted to the wall with no contact with the floor. Floating vanities create a modern, open look and make floor cleaning easy. They require wall blocking for support and professional installation.

Vessel Sink Vanities

Designed to accommodate a bowl-style sink that sits on top of the countertop. The vanity is typically shorter than standard to account for the added height of the vessel sink.

Countertop Options

Many vanities come with a countertop and integrated sink. If you want to choose your own countertop, look for vanities sold as cabinet-only. Popular countertop materials include quartz (durable, low maintenance), marble (classic beauty, requires sealing), and solid surface (seamless integrated sinks).

Construction Quality

Look for solid wood or plywood construction rather than particleboard, especially in humid bathroom environments. Soft-close hinges and drawer slides are standard on quality vanities. Check that drawers clear the plumbing — some vanities have U-shaped or false-front drawers to accommodate pipes.
