Bathroom Faucet Buying Guide: Widespread, Single-Hole & Wall-Mount Options

Choosing the right bathroom faucet involves more than picking a finish you like. The faucet needs to match your sink hole configuration, fit your vanity dimensions, and deliver the performance you expect. This guide walks you through everything you need to know.

Bathroom Faucet Mounting Types

Single-Hole Faucets

The most popular choice for modern bathrooms. A single-hole faucet combines the spout and mixing handle in one unit, requiring just one hole in the sink or countertop. These faucets have a clean, minimal look and are the easiest to install. Most single-hole faucets include an optional deck plate to cover existing 3-hole configurations.

Widespread Faucets

Widespread faucets have three separate components — a spout and two handles — mounted individually. They require three holes spaced 6 to 16 inches apart (most commonly 8 inches center-to-center). Widespread faucets offer a more traditional, upscale appearance and give you more flexibility in handle placement.

Centerset Faucets

A centerset faucet combines the spout and handles on a single base plate, designed for standard 4-inch center-to-center hole spacing. These are common in builder-grade and compact bathrooms where simplicity and affordability matter.

Wall-Mount Faucets

Wall-mounted faucets attach to the wall above the sink rather than the countertop. They create a dramatic design statement and make countertop cleaning effortless. However, they require in-wall rough-in valves and careful planning during construction or renovation.

Key Features to Consider

  • Flow Rate (GPM): WaterSense-certified faucets use 1.2 GPM or less, saving water without sacrificing performance. Standard faucets flow at 1.5-2.2 GPM.
  • Valve Type: Ceramic disc valves are the most durable and drip-free. Avoid compression valves in new purchases.
  • Spout Height and Reach: A taller spout is more comfortable for hand washing but may splash in shallow sinks. Match spout reach to your bowl size.
  • Finish: Polished Chrome is the most affordable and easiest to clean. Brushed Nickel hides water spots. Matte Black is trending but shows fingerprints.

Before You Buy

  1. Count the holes in your sink or countertop (1, 3, or none for wall-mount)
  2. Measure the hole spacing if you have an existing 3-hole setup
  3. Check the spout height clearance if your sink is under a medicine cabinet
  4. Decide if you want a pop-up drain included or a separate drain assembly
