Kitchen Faucet Buying Guide: How to Choose the Right One for Your Home

Choosing the right kitchen faucet is one of the most impactful decisions in a kitchen renovation. You'll use it dozens of times a day, so getting the style, function, and finish right matters. This guide walks you through everything you need to know.

Faucet Mount Types

Deck-Mount (Most Common)

Installed through holes in your sink or countertop. Most kitchen sinks have 1-4 pre-drilled holes. Before shopping, count your holes — this determines which faucets will fit without modification.

  • Single-hole — Clean, modern look. One handle controls both temperature and flow. Brands like KOHLER and Delta offer extensive single-hole lines.
  • Three-hole — Separate hot/cold handles plus spout. Classic look, requires 8" center-to-center spacing.
  • Four-hole — Adds a side sprayer or soap dispenser hole.

Wall-Mount

Mounted to the wall above the sink. Popular in farmhouse and commercial-style kitchens. Requires in-wall plumbing — plan for this during renovation, not after.

Spout Styles

Pull-Down Sprayer

The most popular style today. The spray head pulls straight down into the sink. Great for filling pots and rinsing. The KOHLER K-596 Simplice and Delta 9159-DST Trinsic are two of the best-selling pull-down faucets on the market.

Pull-Out Sprayer

The spray head pulls toward you. Better for smaller sinks where you need more reach. Slightly more flexible than pull-down in tight spaces.

High-Arc / Gooseneck

Tall, curved spout that provides clearance for large pots. Most pull-down faucets are high-arc. Minimum 8" of clearance is standard.

Commercial / Spring-Style

The exposed-spring, industrial look. Functional and striking. Brands like KOHLER (Tournant) and Delta (Broderick) offer residential-friendly commercial-style faucets.

Finish Options

Your faucet finish should coordinate with cabinet hardware, light fixtures, and appliances. Here are the most popular finishes:

  • Polished Chrome — Classic, easy to clean, shows water spots. Most affordable finish.
  • Brushed/Vibrant Stainless — Hides fingerprints and water spots. The most popular finish for modern kitchens. KOHLER calls this "Vibrant Stainless."
  • Matte Black — Bold, contemporary. Pairs well with white or light countertops. Growing rapidly in popularity.
  • Brushed Gold / Champagne Bronze — Warm, on-trend. Delta's "Champagne Bronze" and KOHLER's "Vibrant Brushed Moderne Brass" are the go-to options.
  • Oil-Rubbed Bronze — Rich, traditional warmth. Best in transitional or traditional kitchens.

Valve Technology

The valve is the heart of the faucet — it controls water flow and determines longevity.

  • Ceramic disc valves — The gold standard. Virtually drip-free for life. Used by KOHLER, Delta, Moen, and all premium brands.
  • Delta Diamond Seal — Delta's proprietary valve technology with a diamond-coated ceramic disc. Reduces leak points by 67%.
  • KOHLER Ceramic Valving — Exceeds industry standards by 2x for durability.

Features Worth Paying For

  • Touchless / Hands-Free — Wave sensors activate water flow. Excellent for messy cooking hands. KOHLER Sensate and Moen MotionSense are the leaders.
  • MagnaTite / MagneDock — Magnetic docking keeps the spray head snapped in place. Delta calls it MagnaTite, KOHLER calls it DockNetik.
  • Temperature memory — Returns to your last temperature setting. Standard on most single-handle faucets.
  • Integrated water filter — Built-in filtration (like KOHLER Aquifer) eliminates the need for a separate filter system.
