Bathroom Faucet Buying Guide: Single-Hole, Widespread & Wall-Mount Options

Your bathroom faucet is the fixture you interact with most — washing hands, brushing teeth, face care. The right choice combines your sink configuration, style preferences, and practical needs. Here's how to find the perfect fit.

Faucet Configurations

Single-Hole

One handle and spout through a single hole. The most popular choice for modern bathrooms. Compact, clean-looking, and easy to operate. Most single-hole faucets include a deck plate to cover extra holes if your sink has them.

Centerset (4" Spread)

Two handles and spout on a single base plate. Fits sinks with three holes spaced 4" apart. A traditional, space-efficient design. Good for smaller vanities and powder rooms.

Widespread (8" Spread)

Three separate pieces — two handles and a spout — each installed independently. Requires three holes spaced 8-16" apart. The most premium look, with infinite handle placement flexibility. Popular with KOHLER Devonshire, Artifacts, and Purist collections.

Wall-Mount

Mounted to the wall above the sink. Creates a clean, open vanity look and makes counter cleaning easy. Requires in-wall rough-in valve. Best planned during new construction or major renovation.

Vessel Faucet

Tall single-hole faucets designed for above-counter vessel sinks. Higher spout clears the bowl rim. Available in single-handle and widespread configurations.

Handle Styles

  • Lever handles — Easy to operate, even with wet or soapy hands. ADA-compliant. The most practical choice.
  • Cross handles — Traditional X-shaped handles. Classic, decorative look. Found in collections like KOHLER Artifacts and Kallista.
  • Knob handles — Compact, traditional. Can be harder to grip with wet hands.
  • Single handle — One handle controls temperature and flow. Modern, efficient, saves space.

Popular Finishes

Match your faucet finish to your bathroom hardware (towel bars, toilet paper holder, shower trim, cabinet pulls) for a cohesive look.

  • Polished Chrome — Timeless, matches everything, most affordable
  • Brushed Nickel — Warm silver tone, hides fingerprints, extremely popular
  • Matte Black — Bold contrast, modern statement
  • Brushed Gold — Warm, luxurious, trending in 2025-2026 designs
  • Polished Nickel — Brighter than brushed, classic elegance

Drain Types

Most bathroom faucets include a matching drain assembly. The two main types:

  • Pop-up drain — Operated by a rod behind the faucet or a push-button on the drain itself. Includes an overflow hole.
  • Grid drain — No stopper mechanism, water drains freely. Simpler, easier to clean. Used with vessel sinks that don't need to hold water.

Flow Rate & Water Efficiency

Federal maximum is 2.2 GPM for bathroom faucets. WaterSense-certified faucets use 1.5 GPM or less without sacrificing performance. Most quality faucets from KOHLER, Delta, and Moen meet WaterSense standards.

Matching Your Sink

Before shopping, check your sink:

  1. Count the holes — 1 hole (single-hole faucet), 3 holes 4" apart (centerset), 3 holes 8"+ apart (widespread)
  2. Measure the spread — Distance between outer holes, center to center
  3. Check depth — Ensure the faucet spout reaches the center of the bowl
  4. Vessel sinks — Measure bowl height; you need a tall faucet that clears the rim

Our Recommendation

For a primary bathroom, a widespread faucet in brushed nickel gives you the most premium look and feel. For a powder room or secondary bath, a single-hole faucet keeps things clean and simple. All our faucets come with full manufacturer warranties and ship from New Jersey.
